■Special Feature: The Lineage of Super Dreadnought Battleships
The Birth of HMS Dreadnought and the Rise and Fall of the Big Gun Naval Doctrine

In December 1906, the launch of HMS *Dreadnought*, equipped with five twin 12-inch (305mm) main gun turrets, shocked the world. With its appearance, all existing battleships of the great powers became instantly outdated. Each country responded by building their own so-called "dreadnought"-class battleships. Then in January 1912, the British Royal Navy completed the *Orion*-class battleship, featuring five twin 13.5-inch (343mm) turrets aligned along the centerline — marking the birth of the "super dreadnought."

This development spurred an arms race, accelerating the trend of building bigger battleships with increasingly larger caliber guns, fueling the rise of the "Big Gun" naval doctrine. From the outbreak of World War I, through the Battle of Jutland and the war's end, to the postwar naval arms race, the Washington Naval Treaty, and the ensuing Naval Holiday, time moved on. With the expiration of the treaty and the approach of World War II, super dreadnoughts evolved further, and new battleships were developed. The pinnacle of this evolution was the Japanese battleship *Yamato*, which mounted three triple 18.1-inch (460mm) turrets.

In *Ship Model Special No.44*, we trace the lineage of these super dreadnoughts from the birth of HMS *Dreadnought*, exploring the glory and decline of the big-gun era with numerous scale model showcases.
