我が国は四方を海に囲まれており、外敵は海を渡って侵入し、反対に我が方が打って出る際にも海を渡らなければならなかった。この地理的特性ゆえ、日本陸軍は必要に迫られて多種多様な船舶を運用するに至った。本特集では、航空機運用を可能とする飛行甲板を備え、船内に上陸用舟艇を搭載した「特殊船」、民間商船を徴用した「徴用商船」、さらには世界的にも珍しい陸軍独自建造の潜水艇など、知られざる陸軍船舶の姿を模型を通して紹介する。

Surrounded by the sea on all sides, Japan’s geographic conditions meant that both enemy invasions and domestic offensives had to cross water. This necessity led the Imperial Japanese Army to develop and operate a wide variety of vessels. In this feature, we introduce lesser-known examples of Army-operated ships through scale models — including “special ships” equipped with flight decks and landing craft, requisitioned commercial vessels, and even uniquely constructed Army submarines, which were rare globally.
