特集１：航空母艦「鳳翔」「龍驤」　日本海軍航空母艦の礎

世界初の純粋な航空母艦である日本海軍の空母「鳳翔」。その「鳳翔」の実績を基に設計、建造された航空母艦「龍驤」。建造途中に、ワシントン条約によって巡洋戦艦から改造された「赤城」と戦艦から改造された「加賀」の２大大型空母の陰に隠れた地味な存在であるが、その後の日本海軍航空母艦の設計、建造、運用に多大なる影響を与えたこの両艦、日本海軍正規空母の魁となった両艦の変遷を、フジミ1/700「鳳翔」「龍驤」を使い、モデリングで紐解きます。

特集２：アメリカ海軍強襲揚陸艦のすべて

第２次大戦で上陸作戦を何度も経験してきたアメリカ海軍は、大戦後、急速に性能が発達し搭載力が増大したヘリコプターの機動性を生かし、このヘリコプターを使用しての兵員と機材を大量に、かつ迅速に展開する揚陸作戦を画策、そのための機能、能力を持つ艦の必要性に迫られた。それが具現化したのは朝鮮戦争後で、大戦中に量産され余剰となっていた護衛空母、正規空母からの改造艦としてその一歩を踏み出した。しかし基が空母であるため兵員や物資の搭載能力の面で問題があり、それらを満たす専用の揚陸艦が新造された。
「艦スペ36」では、トランペッターから発売された1/350スケールのアメリカ海軍強襲揚陸艦「ワスプLHD-1」をメインにアメリカ海軍の強襲揚陸艦の変遷を辿ってみます。
また、この第２特集と連動で、「ラベールアーカイブス」に於いてレベル1/720「LHA-1タラワ」も紹介します。

Feature 1: Aircraft Carriers Hosho and Ryujo — The Foundation of Imperial Japanese Navy Carriers

The world’s first purpose-built aircraft carrier, Hōshō, marked a historic milestone in naval aviation. Designed and constructed based on the operational experience gained from Hosho, Ryūjō followed as the next step in Japan’s carrier development.

Although often overshadowed by the two large carriers converted under the Washington Naval Treaty— Akagi, converted from a battlecruiser, and Kaga, converted from a battleship— Hosho and Ryujo played a crucial yet understated role. These two ships profoundly influenced the subsequent design, construction, and operational doctrine of Imperial Japanese Navy fleet carriers.

In this feature, we trace the evolution of these pioneering standard carriers through detailed modeling, using the 1/700 scale Hosho and Ryujo kits from Fujimi to explore their design transitions and historical significance.

Feature 2: The Complete History of U.S. Navy Amphibious Assault Ships

Having conducted numerous amphibious operations during World War II, the United States Navy sought new methods of rapid force projection in the postwar era. With the dramatic advancement in helicopter performance and lift capacity, the Navy envisioned large-scale, high-speed amphibious operations deploying troops and equipment by helicopter.

This concept took shape after the Korean War. Initial efforts involved converting surplus escort and fleet carriers built during World War II. However, because these vessels had originally been designed as aircraft carriers, they proved insufficient in terms of troop accommodation and cargo capacity. As a result, purpose-built amphibious assault ships were developed to fully meet operational requirements.

In the next issue, Kan-Spe 36, we will explore the evolution of U.S. Navy amphibious assault ships, centering on the 1/350 scale USS Wasp (LHD-1) kit released by Trumpeter.
