●特集：日本海軍艦艇建造思想の変換点 初春型駆逐艦 / 千鳥型水雷艇のすべて

ロンドン海軍軍縮条約では補助艦艇の建造が制限され、駆逐艦個艦の排水量は1,850トン以下、うち1,500トン超は合計排水量の16％以内と定められた。すでに特型駆逐艦24隻を保有していた日本海軍は、1,400トン級の艦しか建造できず、特型より280トン小さい船体に同等の兵装を備えた初春型を計画・建造した。 また、600トン以下は制限外だったため、駆逐艦並みの兵装を持つ千鳥型水雷艇を建造した。両艦とも小型ながら重武装で上部構造物も大きくトップヘビーとなった。 昭和9年、水雷艇「千鳥」の転覆（友鶴事件）をきっかけに、復原性と船体強度を改善する大改修が行われた。今号では、初春型と千鳥型の変遷や各艦の特徴を実艦資料を基に解説する。

●Feature: The Turning Point in the Construction Philosophy of the Imperial Japanese Navy – All About the *Hatsuharu*-Class Destroyers and *Chidori*-Class Torpedo Boats

Under the London Naval Treaty, the construction of auxiliary warships was restricted. The standard displacement of destroyers was limited to under 1,850 tons, and ships over 1,500 tons could not exceed 16% of the total tonnage. Having already possessed 24 vessels of the Special Type destroyers, the Imperial Japanese Navy was limited to building ships of around 1,400 tons. Thus, the Hatsuharu-class destroyers were designed with heavy armament similar to the Special Type but on a hull about 280 tons smaller. Ships under 600 tons were exempt from treaty restrictions, which led to the development of the Chidori-class torpedo boats. Though small, they carried destroyer-level armament and large superstructures, making them top-heavy. In 1934, the capsizing of the torpedo boat Chidori (the Tomozuru Incident) led to major reconstruction to improve stability and hull strength. This issue explains the development and characteristics of the Hatsuharu-class destroyers and Chidori-class torpedo boats based on historical materials.
