LEGACY HORNET - 鋼鉄のスズメバチ
F/A-18ホーネット、言わずと知れたアメリカ海軍／海兵隊の主力戦闘攻撃機である。
搭載システムの変更と搭載兵器の積み換えで、戦闘機（Fighter）にも攻撃機（Attacker）にも
変身出来、１機種であらゆるミッションの遂行を可能とした万能戦闘機。
特に、狭い空母での運用にベストパフォーマンスを発揮した。
原型となったYF-17の初飛行から41年、F-18全規模開発機（FSD）１号機の初飛行から37年、
量産１号機の初飛行から35年を経過した超ベテランであるが、今なお現役。
加えて1998年末からは発展型であるF/A-18E/F“スーパーホーネット”が配備され、
次世代のF-35C統合打撃戦闘機の就役まで、空母航空団の主力としての活躍が期待されている。
今回の「飛行機模型スペシャルNo.10」では、このF/A-18ホーネット・シリーズから、
前期型と言えるＡ型からＤ型までの、いわゆる“レガシーホーネット”にスポットを当て、その魅力に迫ります。

LEGACY HORNET – The Steel Wasp
The F/A-18 Hornet is the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps’ flagship multirole combat aircraft—renowned for its versatility. It can shift roles from a fighter to an attacker simply by changing onboard systems and armament, making it a true all-purpose warplane capable of handling any mission. The Hornet’s performance is especially well-suited to the limited space aboard aircraft carriers.
41 years have passed since the first flight of the YF-17 prototype, 37 years since the first FSD (Full Scale Development) aircraft flew, and 35 years since the production model took to the skies—yet the F/A-18 is still in active service today.
Since late 1998, the next-generation F/A-18E/F “Super Hornet” has entered service, bridging the gap until the F-35C Joint Strike Fighter becomes fully operational.
This issue of Aircraft Model Special No.10 focuses on the earlier variants of the Hornet—models A through D—known collectively as the “Legacy Hornets.” We delve into their enduring appeal and combat legacy.
