● Feature: The B-17 Flying Fortress in the European Theater

For aircraft modelers, films such as “Twelve O’Clock High,” “Memphis Belle,” and the “Amazing Stories” TV episode “The Mission” are likely familiar. The true star of these works—and of the deadly struggle over Europe—is none other than the B-17 Flying Fortress.

Originally conceived and completed before World War II as a long-range bomber capable of “defending” the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii, the B-17 was soon thrust into the escalating conflict in Europe. Once the fighting intensified, the design was reviewed and significantly upgraded to withstand attacks from German fighters. The result was a bomber reborn—capable of conducting bombing raids even without fighter escort.

Although early daylight raids against Germany incurred relatively light losses and seemed promising at first, Germany quickly concentrated its full defensive power against the incoming bombing formations. As a result, losses among B-17 units began to rise sharply...

In this issue, we feature the B-17—“The Flying Fortress”—which continued to carry out precision daylight bombing missions despite fierce resistance, ultimately contributing to the collapse of Nazi Germany.
