Special Feature:
Japan's First Supersonic Jet - The Mitsubishi T-2/F-1 of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force
In the context of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's advancing fighter jet capabilities, the T-2 was developed as a high-performance trainer aircraft positioned just below the level of frontline fighters like the F-104J. Initially, there were plans to introduce the T-38 Talon, but the focus shifted to domestic development, driven by a desire to boost Japan's aerospace industry.
The XT-2 supersonic trainer made its first flight in 1971 and retired in March 2006 after 35 years of service. Although powered by a license-built engine, it marked Japan's first domestically developed supersonic jet. Its legacy lives on through its evolution into the F-1 support fighter, its role in the Aggressor Squadron, and the Blue Impulse aerobatic team. Known for its sleek design, the T-2 remains a favorite among aviation enthusiasts.
This feature, previously covered in the "Modeling JASDF" series, will be extensively detailed in Issue 48 of the Aircraft Model Special. The next issue will focus on building major variants in 1/72 and 1/48 scales, including detailed painting and marking guides.
