それまでの夜の戦いは月明かりやサーチライト、暗闇の中で人の目と耳と勘に頼ったものであったが、第２次大戦開戦前に登場したレーダーと、それら関連電子機器の発達で様相は一変、夜の戦いは電子の目と耳の優劣が勝敗を決する時代へと変わっていった。大戦中、終始優位に立ったのがイギリスで、ドイツは常に後手後手に回り、バトルオブブリテン敗退後は、激化する英空軍の夜間爆撃機隊の迎撃に終始することとなる。苦境に立たされたドイツ空軍も新型の機上邀撃レーダーや新型戦闘機でこれに対応。パイロットも熟練し、数多くのエースを輩出する。しかし、物量にものを言わせ大挙押し寄せる英夜間爆撃機と米陸軍航空隊の昼間爆撃にドイツの国力は次第に衰退していくのである…

Before the advent of radar and related electronic devices developed just before World War II, night combat relied heavily on moonlight, searchlights, and human senses such as sight, hearing, and intuition. However, with the introduction of radar, night fighting transformed into an era where electronic "eyes and ears" decided victory or defeat. Throughout the war, Britain maintained superiority, while Germany was often on the defensive. After its defeat in the Battle of Britain, the German Luftwaffe focused on intercepting the increasingly intense RAF night bombing raids.
Despite these challenges, the Luftwaffe responded by deploying new airborne interception radar systems and new fighter models. Skilled pilots emerged, producing many aces. However, overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of British night bombers and the US Army Air Forces' daytime bombing raids, Germany's national strength gradually waned.
This special feature highlights the German night fighters, including prototypes, focusing on relatively recent kits such as Zoukei-Mura's new 1/32 Heinkel He219A-0 “Uhu.” Alongside detailed build examples, we spotlight Luftwaffe night fighter units and their aces.
