特集：日本陸軍・三式戦闘機 飛燕
Air Model Special No.07 "Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien"
太平洋戦争に参加した日本陸海軍戦闘機の中で唯一、液冷エンジンを搭載した日本陸軍・三式戦闘機『飛燕』。
ドイツ・ダイムラーベンツ社の傑作エンジン「DB601」のライセンス生産権を取得して国産化した「ハ四〇」を搭載し、総合性能に優れた戦闘機としてまとめられたスマートな機体は、極めて優秀な性能を示した。しかし、工業力の低さから量産には手間取り、技術力の低さから国産化した「ハ四〇」エンジンの不調、トラブルにも悩まされ、実戦での性能の高さを見せながらも、稼働率の悪さで信頼性に欠ける機体であった。
そんな中にあって、本土防空戦では安定した部品供給と習熟した整備兵の働きもあり、ある程度の稼働率を維持し、高高度を侵入してくるB-29の迎撃に奮戦、三式戦闘機『飛燕』は数多くの戦果を挙げた。
今回の「ひこスペ」では、1/48スケールでは初キットとなるRSモデルの三式戦闘機�鵺型改の発売を受け、日本陸軍・三式戦闘機『飛燕』を特集します。

Special Feature: Japanese Army Type 3 Fighter "Hien"
Air Model Special No.07 "Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien"
Among the Japanese Army and Navy fighters that took part in the Pacific War, the Type 3 Fighter "Hien" was the only one equipped with a liquid-cooled engine.
Powered by the domestically produced Ha-40—a licensed version of the superb Daimler-Benz DB 601—the sleek airframe was a well-balanced and high-performance fighter. However, Japan's limited industrial capacity led to production delays, and the Ha-40 engine suffered from reliability issues due to insufficient technical expertise. Despite its excellent performance in combat, the aircraft struggled with poor operational availability.
Nevertheless, during homeland air defense missions, the availability of spare parts and well-trained maintenance crews enabled the Hien to maintain decent operational rates. It performed valiantly in intercepting high-altitude B-29 bombers, achieving significant success.
This issue of Hiko-Spe (Air Model Special) features the Type 3 Fighter "Hien" to coincide with the release of RS Models' first-ever 1/48 scale kit of the Ki-61-II Kai.
