--------------------
The second installment of the ¡ÈThunder on the Battlefield¡É series focuses on the A-10
Thunderbolt II—an aircraft that inherits the famed nickname of the P-47 Thunderbolt featured
in the previous issue. Known as the ¡Èflying tank¡É for its toughness and formidable firepower,
the A-10 is the subject of this in-depth feature.
Equipped with a nose-mounted 30 mm Gatling gun, a payload exceeding seven tons, and
eleven hardpoints capable of carrying everything from conventional bombs to laser-guided
munitions, the A-10 boasts exceptional attack capability. Its rugged airframe also gives it
remarkably high survivability. Designed specifically for close air support, the A-10 has proven
its effectiveness on numerous battlefields since the Gulf War, repeatedly silencing calls for
its retirement. Though over 40 years have passed since its first flight, no true successor
exists. Development delays of the F-35 Lightning II have further led to the decision to extend
A-10 operations indefinitely.
In this issue, we spotlight the A-10 Thunderbolt II—an aircraft that can rightfully be called
the most powerful attack aircraft in the world.
