2019年度末の退役が迫る、航空自衛隊のRF-4E/RF-4EJファントム偵察機。F-4ファントムの偵察機型の歴史は、1964年９月、アメリカ空軍に引き渡されたRF-4Cに始まる。戦闘機型の短い機首を再設計して延長し、そこに３台のカメラと赤外線偵察機材を搭載する他、機首最前部には地形追従能力を持つレーダーを装備し、全天候型の戦術偵察機として生まれ変わった。米海兵隊では25年、米空軍では30年にわたり運用され、ベトナム戦争から湾岸戦争まで多くの実戦に活躍した。米空軍/海兵隊以外では、輸出型であるRF-4Eを西ドイツ、イラン、イスラエル、日本、ギリシャ、トルコが運用。航空自衛隊では、そのRF-4Eを1974年に導入。45年にわたり、戦術目的の他、大規模災害でのいち早い被災状況の把握に尽力した。飛行機模型スペシャルNo.28では、連載の「モデリングJASDF」とも連動して、世界の「レコンファントム」を特集します。

Feature: The Complete Story of the Reconnaissance Phantom

With retirement scheduled toward the end of fiscal year 2019, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s RF-4E and RF-4EJ Phantom reconnaissance aircraft were approaching the conclusion of their long service careers. The history of reconnaissance variants of the F-4 Phantom began in September 1964 with the delivery of the RF-4C to the United States Air Force.
To create the reconnaissance version, the fighter’s short nose was redesigned and extended to house three cameras and infrared reconnaissance equipment. In addition, the extreme forward section of the nose was fitted with a radar capable of terrain-following, transforming the aircraft into an all-weather tactical reconnaissance platform. The RF-4 served for 25 years with the U.S. Marine Corps and 30 years with the U.S. Air Force, seeing extensive combat service from the Vietnam War through the Gulf War.

Beyond the U.S. Air Force and Marine Corps, the export variant RF-4E was operated by West Germany, Iran, Israel, Japan, Greece, and Turkey. The JASDF introduced the RF-4E in 1974, and for 45 years these aircraft played a vital role not only in tactical reconnaissance but also in rapidly assessing damage following large-scale natural disasters.
