『憎きグラマン』の言葉に代表されるF6Fヘルキャットをはじめ、映画「トコリの橋」でのF9Fパンサー、映画「トップガン」ではF-14トムキャットが一躍メジャーになり、我らが日本人にとって『グラマン』といえばアメリカの戦闘機の代名詞とも言える存在です。本国アメリカでは、機体の頑丈さからくる信頼性と生存性の高さから『グラマン鉄工所』と畏敬を込めて呼び、アメリカ海軍のアクロバットチーム・ブルーエンジェルスの歴代使用機にも多機種が採用されています。そんな「グラマン戦闘機」の多くには猫科の動物に因んだ愛称が付けられたことは有名です。「飛行機模型スペシャルNo.13」では、このグラマン社の艦上戦闘機の系譜を模型で辿ります。

From the infamous F6F Hellcat—synonymous with the phrase "those damned Grummans"—to the F9F Panther featured in the film *The Bridges at Toko-Ri*, and the iconic F-14 Tomcat from *Top Gun*, Grumman fighters have become a symbol of American airpower, especially in the eyes of Japanese aviation enthusiasts. In the U.S., Grumman aircraft earned the nickname "Grumman Iron Works" due to their rugged design, known for reliability and survivability. Many of these aircraft were also selected for use by the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels demonstration team.

One of the most notable aspects of Grumman fighters is their naming tradition—many of their aircraft are named after feline predators. In *Aircraft Model Special No.13*, we trace the rich history of Grumman’s carrier-based fighters through scale models.
