MiG-25フォックスバット／MiG-31 フォックスハウンド

世界で唯一のマッハ３級の戦闘機、ベレンコ中尉亡命事件でその名を知られる旧ソ連のミコヤンMiG-25、NATOコードネーム「フォックスバット」。そして、その改良発展型と言われるMiG-31「フォックスハウンド」。似ているのは機体外形だけで、時代の変化と戦術の変化により、MiG-25に対する要求が変わった。20,000ｍの高高度を、マッハ２を超える超音速で侵入する敵機の迎撃から、地上のレーダー網を掻い潜り超低空飛行で侵入する巡航ミサイル、爆撃機や攻撃機の迎撃へと変わったため、基本設計をそのままに、機体を構成する素材、エンジン、搭載レーダーとアビオニクス、複座化し後席にはレーダー員を配置するなど、そのすべてを見直すこととなったのだ。こうして生まれたMiG-31、見た目こそはMiG-25と似ているがほとんど別機となったのだ。

MiG-25 “Foxbat” / MiG-31 “Foxhound”

The world’s only Mach 3–class fighter, the Soviet Mikoyan MiG-25—known to NATO as “Foxbat”—became famous worldwide following Lt. Belenko’s defection incident. Its supposed improved and developed successor, the MiG-31 “Foxhound,” may resemble the MiG-25 in outward appearance, but the similarities largely end there. As times and tactics evolved, so too did the operational requirements placed upon the MiG-25. Originally designed to intercept enemy aircraft penetrating at over Mach 2 at altitudes exceeding 20,000 meters, the mission profile later shifted toward countering cruise missiles flying at extremely low altitudes to evade ground radar networks, as well as intercepting bombers and attack aircraft. While retaining the basic airframe concept, the MiG-31 underwent a comprehensive redesign: new structural materials, new engines, upgraded radar and avionics systems, and a two-seat configuration with a dedicated radar intercept officer in the rear cockpit. Thus emerged the MiG-31—visually similar to the MiG-25, yet in reality an almost entirely different aircraft.
