本誌では第３弾となる「F-4ファントムⅡ」特集。No.16では、F-4ファントムⅡの基本形と言える「ショートノーズ型」を、Mo.28では、機首を延長することで出来た空間に、専用機材を積んだ「偵察機型」をそれぞれお届けした。ミサイル万能論時代に生まれたF-4ファントム。戦訓などからも固定武装（機銃）の必要性が生じ、偵察機型に倣いアメリカ空軍のF-4Dの機首を延長し、その下部に20㎜バルカン砲を搭載して誕生したのがF-4Eで、これを基本とした派生型が俗に言われる「ロングノーズ型」だ。これにより戦闘力を増したF-4Eは本国アメリカ空軍をはじめ、我が日本をはじめ諸外国でも主力戦闘機として運用された。また、これとは別にイギリスに渡ったF-4ファントムⅡ、いわゆるブリティッシュ・ファントムは独自の進化を遂げた。これは「お国事情」によるところも多いのだが、その最大の変更点は搭載エンジン。ファントムのエンジンといえばゼネラル・エレクトリックJ79だが、これを自国のロールスロイス・スペイに換装したことが特徴だ。それゆえ、「スペイ・ファントム」とも呼ばれることもある。飛行機模型スペシャルNo.31では、この「ロングノーズ型」と「スペイ・ファントム」を総力特集します！

Feature: F-4 Phantom II – Long Nose & “Spey” Phantom
This is the third F-4 Phantom II special issue in the series.
Issue No.16 covered the “short-nose” variants—the basic form of the Phantom—while No.28 focused on reconnaissance versions with extended noses housing specialized equipment.

Born in the era of missile-centric air combat theory, the F-4 Phantom II later proved the continued necessity of internal guns through real combat experience. Following the reconnaissance variants, the U.S. Air Force extended the nose of the F-4D to install a 20mm Vulcan cannon, giving birth to the F-4E. This configuration became the basis for what is commonly known as the “long-nose” Phantom.

The enhanced F-4E served as a frontline fighter not only with the U.S. Air Force, but also with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force and many other nations.

Meanwhile, a completely different evolutionary path was taken in the United Kingdom. The British Phantom featured the most significant change of all: replacing the standard GE J79 engines with Rolls-Royce Spey turbofans. These uniquely modified aircraft are widely known as the “Spey Phantoms.”
