特集：ザ・スパイプレーン～戦略偵察機の系譜

偵察…相手の情報を秘かに行動し収集すること。気球が開発された18世紀末には、それを使った空からの偵察が始められている。飛行機が登場するとその行動力の広さから、敵地へ侵入して情報を得ようと躍起になった。二度の世界大戦で航空機は飛躍的に発達するわけだが、それは『より速く、より高く、より遠く』を目指しての、各国の開発研究の賜物であった。中でも偵察専用機として開発された大日本帝国陸軍の九七式司令部偵察機とその後継機である百式司令部偵察機は、戦後の戦略偵察機開発に大きな影響を与えた。戦後、東西冷戦期になるとジェット、ロケットといった新しい動力源が急発達。また、レーダーや電子関係の発達もあり「偵察」の方法は多様化していく。人工衛星を使い宇宙からの偵察もその一つ。しかし偵察は「より正確」さが求められるため、航空機による偵察は欠くことの出来ないファクターであった。そんな中に登場したアメリカのU-2やSR-71はその頂点に立つ存在であった。飛行機模型スペシャルNo.32では、「戦術偵察機」「戦略偵察機」「電子偵察機」に大別される「偵察機」の中から「戦略偵察機」にスポットを当て、その系譜を辿ってみます。

Reconnaissance—the covert gathering of information on an adversary—has been a vital military activity for centuries. As early as the late 18th century, observation balloons were already being used for aerial reconnaissance. With the advent of aircraft, their extended range and mobility made them indispensable tools for penetrating enemy territory and collecting intelligence.

Through two world wars, aircraft technology advanced at an extraordinary pace, driven by the pursuit of flying faster, higher, and farther. Among the most influential designs were Japan’s Type 97 Command Reconnaissance Aircraft and its successor, the Type 100, both developed by the Imperial Japanese Army. These aircraft left a lasting legacy that would influence postwar strategic reconnaissance aircraft around the world. During the Cold War, rapid advances in jet and rocket propulsion, along with breakthroughs in radar and electronic technologies, dramatically expanded the methods of reconnaissance. Satellites enabled observation from space, yet the demand for precise, detailed intelligence ensured that aircraft-based reconnaissance remained indispensable.

It was in this environment that legendary aircraft such as the U-2 Dragon Lady and SR-71 Blackbird emerged—icons that stood at the pinnacle of strategic reconnaissance aviation.
